Nobody # 696
Nobody Asked Me But:
Recently I ran across an interesting idea.
What would you write yourself an e-mail to be delivered 50 years from now? Here is my answer.
Dear Jim,
I hope you are still alive to read this but only if everyone that you love is alive too. With your good life-style habits and those of the others, I fully expect this will be the case.
I think the following things will have happened since 2007 when I wrote this.
In 2008, the newly elected Democratic team of Clinton/Obama or was it Obama/Clinton ended the nonsense war in Iraq and stepped up the real war on Islamic fundamentalism. Most of the then current leadership of that group were killed or captured.
However, the terrorist movement itself ended only after one of the new leaders struck it rich in 2010 by opening several Starbucks in Tehran and Damascus. His example was followed by many others, and hatred of the West just sort of brewed away. In fact the only terrorist act since that time was in 2011 when one of these new owners bombed a Seattle’s Best. (after closing hours, thank goodness) He was quickly stripped of his franchise, and there has been a highly caffeinated peace ever since.<<<
There is also peace between Israel and the Muslim world. Israel returned all the occupied territory, a new Palestine was created with the support of billions in aid from France (most of it in wine) and the Muslim world promised recognition and peace.
In a yearly commemoration ceremony Isaac and Ishmael symbolically slay a lion and lie down with several lambs.<<<
There was a brief Civil War in Idaho when the first person of color moved to that state. This caused the white supremacist majority to march on Boise, seize the government and secede. The rebellion was quickly put down. When the army, lead by a re-opted Colin Powell and made up exclusively of Blacks, Latinos, Asians Jews, women and gays, entered the state from three sides, the supremacist fled in terror. They first tried to join up with Mel Gibson’s father but the Australian government emphatically turned them away. Since then, with no country to welcome them, they have lived constantly at sea on their ships of fools.<<<
Aside from the incident in Idaho and a new Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins new series, Left Far Behind, a post- apocalyptic look at life in a hell that looks amazingly like a school board meeting, these have been a good fifty years for America.
The Bill of Rights was restored.
New vaccines were discovered which prevented several types of cancer, and other cancers, were controlled much like AIDS, with drugs that allowed people to complete their total life cycles.
Great gains were made in programs to protect and even restore our environment – including cars powered by their sunroofs. Luckily, before this latter moved from theory to reality many far-sighted people dumped their Exxon-Mobil stock at record high prices.
In the personal realm, I was a bursting with grandpa pride as:
Marine biologist Ryan became the first human to communicate with sharks, even including the anti-social great white. His book on the subject has been on the NY Times Best Seller list for 11 consecutive years.
Emily led her Team USA to four World Cups, then retired to coach the team to four more, while living happily as the wife of Nomar Garciaparra Jr.
Benjamin directed a remake of “Gunga Din,” which is generally considered superior to the original and the best adventure film ever.
Alex still edits and publishes the newspaper he started, the Multicultural Daily. It has the highest circulation among national papers, having passed USA Today several years ago.
My wife remains by my side, as always, giving me the love and support that sustains my daily life and the materials to clean all the bathrooms once a week. We just celebrated our 67th wedding anniversary. I gave her a trip to Maine and she, me, one to Hawaii.
Elizabeth, left her job in teaching and counseling to become a consultant on parenting, and now, of course, grandparenting. She still glories in family/friend gatherings and never misses any chance to celebrate. Recently she had a Bastille Day potluck with everyone bringing a different variety of French fry. Before that it was a dinner to honor George’s victory in the Arizona Over-One-Hundred Biathlon.
Greg lives a soft and gentle life in the Bay Area with his wife. They have now been together 48 years. He spends his days doing political fieldwork for the +90 lobby and his evenings composing music.
Jim made it big as a novelist when the publisher turned his first book, published in 2008, into a series. He has now published 35 multi-generational books about these characters as well as several stand-alones. He and Vicki, a successful artist, divide their time between their two garden-spot homes - one in Northern Italy and the other in Hemet.
Hugh gave up teaching and kidney stones for golfing and bowling. He does both in the low 100s. Just kidding. He has won many post-senior tournaments, most of which he credits to his habit of buying a new set of irons every year.
Libby is still teaching physical education at Hale but plans on retiring next year. She and Jack still spend their weekends helping Katie and Rick move, and rotate their vacations between Sun Valley, where K&R have a get-away home, Atlanta where Pete is a highly successful business man, although still a bit of a playboy and in San Francisco sailing with Amy and Cam
Gary, who could have been an outstanding novelist, instead chose to be an outstanding husband and father. His and Sheena’s house is filled with joy.
Finally recognizing that he was one of those rare people who gave to and took nothing from their country, Canada granted a permanent visa to Tom. He now spends his winters there and his summers in Palm Springs.
As for me, I remain a creature of habit. Starbucks and Coldstone once a week and mochas every Sunday. And I still stick to middle-sized in both as shown by the fact that I retain the same size double-XX in tee shirts that I wore when a kid of 72.)
And, as you can plainly see, I still write my weekly Nobodies. Today’s is number 3,196, which total about 3,000,000 words – many of which, thanks to (almost) universal retirement among this group, have been read. Even comments have been on the increase and now average over the one per Nobody that was the case for the first 1,500.
Oh, and yes, to finally end the suspense and answer the question about which so many of you have long wondered – I am a political and social liberal. Mind you, I am not doctrinaire about it, but I have seen the truth and patiently, over the years, revealed it to you.<<<

You forgot to add that I spent many Saturdays drinking coffee at Starbucks solving the problems of the world and LA sports teams with my buddy Jim (and munching on tasty baked goodies courtesy of Barb!).
